Our family loves Halloween! We start planning our costumes way, way in advance and every year try to add some kind of new fun decoration too. It’s become especially fun with little kids, because they are jazzed months in advance, dreaming about the candy and treats.
What’s a holiday without a fun dessert? These Frankenstein Halloween Pretzel Roads are the perfect salty, sweet and festive treat for your party table this year (be sure to also check out Mummy Halloween Brownies too).
Chocolate covered pretzels are one of my favorite treat choices all year long, and make a great holiday treat option because they’re easy to make and customize.
No stove is required for these easy no-bake treats. All you need is a microwave, a microwave safe bowl or mug, and a cookie sheet to whip these up in about 20 minutes! No double boiler needed.
This spooky treat is perfect for classroom Halloween party, or to give to your friends, co-workers or neighbors this holiday.

Ingredients Needed for Halloween Pretzel Rods
- Pretzel Rods (be sure to grab the large pretzels!)
- Green candy melts (note: the photo above shows white ones, but we ended up using green for this recipe)
- Paramount crystals – these help aid the melting of chocolate and other coatings. This is optional, but it will help your recipe. You can grab a bag here on Amazon or here on Walmart’s website.
- Brown candy melts or chocolate chips (I recommend milk chocolate or dark chocolate, for the color)
- Candy eyes – These are available at Amazon or Walmart, and can be found in most grocery stores or craft stores in the baking aisle, too!
- Sprinkles (optional)
You’ll also need:
- 2 small microwave safe bowls
- Parchment paper or wax paper
- 2 Piping bags (or freezer bags you cut the end off of)
- A spoon and a spatula
How to Make Halloween Pretzel Treats
These cute Halloween treats take only a little prep time, and are an easy recipe to put together. These ghoulish treats are guaranteed to wow your kids (or your grown up guests too).
First, set aside about 1/8 cup of the green candy melts. Then, melt the remainder in the microwave by microwaving in 30 second increments, stirring in between each session. Remove the bowl from the microwave just before it appears fully melted, and stir until smooth.
Add the paramount crystals and stir until dissolved. This will thin out the chocolate so that it goes further.
Prepare a baking sheet with parchment paper. While some recipes call for you to dip pretzels in the melted candy, I’ve found the best way to minimize it getting all over my kitchen (and coating evenly) is using a spoon.
Gently spoon the melted green candy melts onto the top of the pretzels, being sure to turn the sides of the pretzels to get the chocolate on the back too, and place on the prepared cookie sheet to set. If you want to add sprinkles, add those now.
If you want your Frankenstein Halloween pretzel rods to set faster, you can place the tray into the fridge for about 20-30 minutes to set faster.
Once the pretzel rods are set with the green candy coating, melt candy melts or chocolate using the same process. Be sure to add the paramount crystals as you did before as well.
Place the melted chocolate into a piping bag and cut a small hole in the tip of it. Don’t have a piping bag? A Ziplock bag works great too! Place the chocolate in the bag so it feeds into one corner, and then cut a tiny hole in that corner to create your own DIY piping bag.
Pipe dots onto the pretzel rod where the eyes go, and place the candy eyes on top. You may need to hold the eyes in place for a couple seconds to make sure they stay firm and set. Want the whole family to get in on this? Applying the eyes is a great responsibility for the kids.
Pipe the hair on, and the wiggly mouth too! Melt the remaining green candy melt and add it to a piping bag, and pipe on the stitches.
Let the final chocolate set to room temperature (or place back in the fridge). Arrange the finished pretzel sticks on a tray or standing up in a tall glass for your Halloween party!
Store the remainder in an airtight container.
