My children have absolutely loved Eric Carle’s “Very Hungry Caterpillar” book for many years. It was one of the first books that they sought out from their bedroom bookshelves, and I have so many wonderful, sweet memories curled up in a rocking chair with them, reading it together.
Eric Carle’s illustrations are magical, and so great for littles. My boys love to follow the caterpillar throughout the book, and it’s a great story to work through colors, shape recognition, different kinds of fruit and more.
In fact, my oldest loved this classic book so much that by the time he was one, I had the entire thing memorized! That came in handy when I was trying to juggle him and a new baby, and I have a feeling this sweet story will stay in my memory for a long time.
Some days you just need a completely goof-proof craft. It was on one of those afternoons that this idea was born. This super easy and inexpensive Very Hungry Caterpillar Paper Plate Craft goes perfectly with reading the beloved Eric Carle book, and only needs a few items that you probably already have in your craft bin or closet!

How to Make a Very Hungry Caterpillar Paper Plate Craft
You’re going to love how simple this craft is! The best part? Even toddlers and preschoolers can help in a hands on way!
First, tear a sheet of red construction paper into small, thumb size pieces. This is a great step for your child to do themselves, as it’s impossible to mess up.

Next, glue those strips of torn red construction paper onto a paper plate. You can either cover the paper plate with the glue for your child, or let them do it themselves.
Next, cut out the face shapes for the caterpillar: two yellow ovals, two slightly smaller green ovals, one roundish black nose and two purple antennae. It’s ok if your pieces aren’t perfect! One of the beautiful parts of the Very Hungry Caterpillar is his face wasn’t perfect, either.

Glue the face pieces onto the covered paper plate. Display your little one’s art somewhere proudly!
