Why Kids Love The Very Hungry Caterpillar

All three of my children have adored Eric Carle’s The Very Hungry Caterpillar™ for years. It was one of the favorite classics they each reached for first from our shelves, and I still find my youngest pulling it out many mornings. The cover art and bright illustrations have stood the test of time since the first edition of Eric Carle was published in 1969, and it remains one of the world of Eric Carle’s most popular titles.

This great book is more than just a story: it helps young learners explore colors, shapes, days of the week, and healthy food items in a way that is both fun and educational. It even touches on the life cycle of a butterfly, transforming from egg to beautiful butterfly—a concept kids never tire of.
