When I was a kid our family was big on road trips, and I loved doing Mad Libs during them! My parents used to buy me book after book of them. What I didn’t realize at the time was that they loved me wanting to do them because it was also a sneaky way to reinforce learning the different parts of speech, like verb, adjective, noun etc.

My 6 year old recently brought up Mad Libs after hearing some of the older kids at school talking about this fun game. While he’s not quite old enough to do them on his own, doing them together is a great way to spend some special time with him. Plus, reading them out loud to his brothers is great practice (and so fun for them, too).

I decided we should create our own mad libs, and these Christmas mad libs for kids were inspired by that. Each Christmas mad libs printable is a different holiday-inspired story. Just fill in the blanks to create your own personalized holiday tale.

The best part? Your story options are endless! Each time your kiddos can just different words to create completely unique stories again and again.

This is a great activity any time of the holiday season or Christmas break, and one that even toddlers can take part in helping create.

What is a Mad Lib?

While I grew up doing Mad Lib stories, I know not everyone knows what a mad lib is! In a nutshell, a mad lib is a story that has blank spaces that need to be filled with different kinds of missing words.

You are prompted to fill in words based on parts of speech, like:

  • Verb
  • Noun
  • Adjective
  • Adverb

Once those blanks are filled in with words, you can read the complete story back. These are usually silly, goofy stories that always make people laugh. Some people consider Mad Libs to be the world’s greatest word game!

While I’m not sure I’d go that far, I do love family games that spread Christmas cheer and also have simple directions. These mad libs printables are so easy and fun!

How to Use a Mad Lib

Mad Libs can be done with as little as just one person, but are much more fun with two people (or more). This makes them more interactive, and a Christmas mad libs printable can become a wonderful family holiday activity this way.

With two or more people, it also allows the final story to be a surprise for most of the participants. Choose one person to be in charge of filling out the blanks. This should be the only person who receives a printed out copy.

This person then reads ONLY the blanks, describing what type of answers they’re searching for. I’ve included a word helper with this set of Christmas mad libs for kids, in case it’s been a while since you’ve gone over parts of speech.

Once all the blanks are filled in, the scribe then reads the silly story out loud to the rest of the group! Free printable Christmas mad libs make a fun family activity, and the funny stories are so much fun for kids of all ages (and perfect for a good laugh).

If your family homeschools or you’re a teacher, you can also incorporate these Christmas fun mad libs into your winter lesson plans. In addition to making fun Christmas party games for a wide age range (or a good brain break during family gatherings), they’re also a simple way to encourage creative writing, language arts, vocabulary skills and critical thinking.
