When you’re getting ready to welcome your new baby, you’ll probably find yourself thinking about all kinds of milestones—first smiles, first holidays, and of course, those precious newborn photos. One of the most common questions I hear from new moms (and one I’ve asked myself more than once) is: what should I wear for a newborn photoshoot?

As a mom of three, I’ve had three very different newborn photo sessions. Each one taught me something new about picking the right outfits for both me and the rest of the family.

Here’s my mom-to-mom guide to newborn photoshoot outfits for mom—because I know how overwhelming it can feel when you’re sleep-deprived, healing, and trying to look “put together” with a brand new baby in your arms.

What to Wear for a Newborn Photoshoot

The truth is, your outfit can make or break how you feel in your newborn photos. You want to feel good in what you’re wearing, but also make sure the focus stays on your new baby and the love in your family photos. What you wear matters in newborn photos!

The best newborn photographers will tell you: choose comfortable clothing that works with the style of your session. Whether you’re doing an in-home newborn session, a studio shoot or outdoor family photos, the outfit colors, fabrics, and fit all contribute to the timeless look of your pictures.

For my first newborn session (which took place during the summer), I showed up in a fitted pre-pregnancy white top and jeans. The photos looked beautiful, but I felt so physically uncomfortable the entire time. I learned that next time comfort was just as important as style.

For my second (during winter), I wore a looser, soft black sweater and pregnancy jeans. I coordinated my husband and older son in earth tone solid shirts. The result were family photos that felt natural and timeless, and our family really enjoyed the session.

For my third newborn photo session (during the fall), I opted for a flowy dress in neutral colors. My older boys and husband wore comfortable tops in solid colors. We all felt relaxed, and the simple, light tones photographed beautifully against the backdrop.

Tips for Choosing the Best Newborn Photoshoot Outfits for Mom

Whether you’re choosing a studio session, lifestyle newborn session at home or outdoor family photos, here are a few things I wish I had known before that first shoot:

  1. Stick with Neutral Colors and Earth Tones

Colors like soft whites, tans, creams, blush pinks, and sage greens create a timeless look that won’t distract from your baby. Neutral colors also pair beautifully with most newborn sessions, whether they’re styled in wraps, swaddles, or sweet little outfits.

  1. Add Subtle Patterns or a Pop of Color

A subtle pattern (like small florals or stripes) or a pop of color (think a dusty blue cardigan or a pink blush scarf) adds visual interest without overwhelming the photo. Just avoid loud prints or neon shades, which can take the focus away from your baby.

  1. Choose Comfortable Clothing

This is not the time for stiff fabrics or anything that makes you feel self-conscious. A flowy dress, a solid shirt with leggings, or even a cozy sweater are all great options. Remember, you’ll be holding your new baby through most of the shoot—so prioritize pieces that allow for easy movement (and maybe even a quick diaper change break).

  1. Coordinate with the Entire Family

If you’re including older children or siblings, stick to a color scheme. For example, you might wear a cream dress, your partner a polo shirt in sage green, and the rest of the family in soft blues and tans. This creates cohesion without looking too “matchy-matchy.” Here are some more tips about what to wear for family photos.

  1. Think About the Setting

Studio sessions often look best with solid colors and classic silhouettes. In-home newborn sessions shine with cozy fabrics and light colors that reflect the warmth of your home. Outdoor photo shoots are the perfect time for earth tones that echo the natural backdrop.

Newborn Photo Outfit Ideas for New Moms

If you’re feeling stuck, here are some tried-and-true newborn photoshoot outfit ideas for mom:

  • Flowy dress in neutral colors (great for flattering postpartum bodies).
  • Solid shirt + cardigan + leggings (easy layering and comfort).
  • Soft sweater in light colors (pairs beautifully with baby swaddles).
  • Pink blush wrap dress (a beautiful option for a soft, feminine look).
  • Earth-toned maxi dress (perfect for outdoor family photos).

For partners and older siblings, think solid shirts, polo shirts, or comfortable clothing in the same color schemes. And don’t forget: sometimes the best part of family photos is capturing the chaos, so let your kids’ personalities shine too.

What to Avoid in Newborn Photoshoot Outfits

  • Small parts or accessories that could be unsafe for your baby.
  • Distracting logos or busy prints.
  • Anything uncomfortable—you’ll regret it halfway through the session.
  • All-black outfits, which can feel too harsh in newborn photos.
