Why Visit Helen, Georgia in October?
October is when the town of Helen truly comes alive! This small alpine village tucked into the Blue Ridge Mountains transforms into the most festive destination in Georgia. Their Octoberfest celebration begins in September, and usually runs Thursday through Sunday the first few weeks. At the end of September it becomes a nightly party through the end of October/beginning of November.
Fall foliage is at its peak in the Helen area. The brilliant fall colors in the surrounding areas of the Chattahoochee National Forest are worth the trip alone.
Helen hosts the longest-running Oktoberfest in the United States, filling the air with live music, German-style bands, and traditional polka dancing. Helen also looks straight out of a storybook, like a little picturesque village dropped in North Georgia.
The cooler weather makes it the perfect time for outdoor activities, whether you’re exploring Unicoi State Park, riding the Georgia Mountain Coaster, or strolling downtown Helen along Edelweiss Strasse.
It’s a great time for families, couples, and groups of friends to make memories in this charming little German town. I started coming here in college with my sorority sisters, and it’s remained a favorite for so many of us now that we’re parents, too.

Helen’s Oktoberfest: A Celebration for All Ages
The highlight of October in Helen is, of course, Helen’s Oktoberfest. This annual festival is modeled after the original Oktoberfest in Munich, Germany, where Princess Therese and the citizens of Munich first celebrated with horse racing, beer, and dancing.
In Helen, the main event takes place at the Helen Festhalle, a large Bavarian-style beer hall that’s family-friendly during the day. Here’s what you’ll find:
- Tapping of the keg (and the tapping of the first keg of Oktoberfest) kicking off the festival.
- Traditional German food like bratwurst, schnitzel, German potato salad, and red cabbage—plus sweet treats like yeast dumplings with vanilla sauce.
- Traditional German beer and even American beer for variety.
- Bavarian-style beer hall music, the famous chicken dance, and a lively dance floor.
- German-style bands and traditional German bands performing throughout the weeks of September into the end of October.
- Adorable alpine buildings that are perfect as a fall backdrop.
- The annual Oktoberfest Parade, which is a huge draw.
Entry fees for events and businesses vary, with options like a Saturday pass, half-price weekday entry, and free admission for children. For families, going earlier in the day is the best way to enjoy the atmosphere without the late-night party vibe of the longest running Oktoberfest celebration.
Family-Friendly Fun Beyond Oktoberfest
If you’re bringing young kids or want a mix of activities, Helen has lots of fun activities beyond the beer hall.
Explore the Outdoors
- Unicoi State Park: With picnic areas, a lake, and plenty of trails, this is a great time to explore the outdoors. They offer lots of activity options, including easy trails to waterfalls, ziplining and paddleboarding.
- Anna Ruby Falls: Located in Unicoi State Park, it’s a short hike with stroller-friendly paths to a breathtaking waterfall, this is one of the most worth visiting spots near Helen.
- Chattahoochee River: Many people don’t realize the Chattahoochee River actually runs from North Georgia, and runs literally through the middle of Helen! During the warmer months our family loves to “shoot the hooch” in Helen, but most options are closed by Labor Day. If you’re in Helen in October you can still enjoy the beauty of the river. Walk along the riverbank or pack a picnic for a peaceful afternoon.
- North Georgia Wildlife and Safari Park: Technically in Cleveland, but a lot of fun for families if you have extra time or are staying a few days. North Georgia Wildlife Park has a wildlife park, safari drive-thru and a pettting farm. They specialize in hands-on, interactive, personalized experiences with animals such as otters, capybaras, sloths, penguins, and more.

Planning Tips for Visiting Helen in October
The Helen Visitors Bureau and White County Convention office are great resources for the latest event details. They’re the best places to check for updates on events and activities during your visit.
Be sure to arrive early for the Oktoberfest parade and big main event weekends (which is basically every weekend in October). Parking can be tough in the city of Helen, as there are a limited amount of parking lots, so leave extra time if you’re driving up the same day.
While Helen is beautiful in October, it’s also still Georgia. Bring layers for chilly nights but plan for hot, sunny afternoons.
