For many people, May symbolizes the end of the school year, almost the beginning of summer, Mother’s Day and Cinco de Mayo! Cinco de Mayo (which translated means fifth of May or May 5th), is a celebration that originated in Mexico but has grown in immense popularity in the United States.
What does Cinco de Mayo celebrate? This holiday is observed each year to mark the victory of the the battle of Puebla, Mexico against the French.
During the mid-1800’s French leader Emperor Napoleon III tried to take control of Mexico. On the morning of May 5, 1862, French troops stormed the Mexican city to bring it under French rule. While the Mexican soldiers were outnumbered, they fought back fiercely and successfully drove the French troops to retreat. This battle became an important blow against the French.
In the United States, people mark the occasion by listening to lively Mexican music (including Mexican folk music like mariachi music), attending parades, watching colorfully dressed dancers perform and of course, eating all the yummy Mexican foods (like shredded chicken, Mexican street corn pasta salad and guacamole).
While adults might be having a lot of fun on this festive day, don’t forget about activities to keep the kids entertained, too. This collection of Cinco de Mayo art activities for kids was cultivated to help make this easy (so you can spend more time celebrating).
